Just 45 minutes north of Lisbon lies a charming coastal town known as the Surf Capital of Europe.

Ericeira is one of the only designated World Surf Reserves in Europe, meaning its coastline, waves, surrounding landscapes, and ecosystems are protected from overdevelopment and other preventable threats. In other words: stunning ocean views, dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, and preserved natural beauty.
While surfers have long been drawn to Ericeira for its world-class waves, you don't need to surf to fall in love with this place.
I discovered this place by happenstance, and got to spend six nights leading a wellness retreat here in June 2025, and by the end of the week it was easy to understand why so many people return year after year. Ericeira offers a rare combination of liveliness and ease, community and tranquility, vibrant energy and deep rest.
It's the kind of place where you can spend your morning walking along rugged coastal trails, your afternoon cooling off in the Atlantic Ocean, and your evening dancing to music as the sun sets over the cliffs. Our sanctuary, SandhiHouse, gave us the perfect home-away-from-home to watch the waves from our living room, eat the most nourishing local chef-cooked meals, and rest before each day of practicing yoga in our shala and exploring the town.
For anyone seeking a destination that feels both inspiring and grounding, Ericeira delivers.

What Makes Ericeira Different From Other Coastal Destinations?
When people first hear about Ericeira, they often wonder: Is it a sleepy beach town, or is it a busy tourist destination?
The truth is that it's a beautiful balance of both.
While Ericeira has certainly grown in popularity over the years, it still manages to hold onto the small-town charm that makes it feel so special.
Digital nomads, surfers, wellness travelers, and visitors from around the world have discovered this stretch of coastline, bringing new energy, restaurants, cafes, and businesses to the area. Yet somehow, Ericeira still feels local. You'll find neighbors catching up over coffee, shop owners dipping their toes in the sand during their midday break, and familiar faces appearing throughout the week.
Part of what makes the area so unique is its World Surf Reserve status. The coastline, waves, surrounding landscapes, and ecosystems are protected, helping preserve the natural beauty that draws people here in the first place. As development continues in many coastal destinations around the world, Ericeira has made a conscious effort to protect what makes it special.
The result is a destination that feels both vibrant and grounded. There is plenty happening—surf culture, bustling cafes, local markets, sidewalk dj sets, wellness offerings, and lively evenings overlooking the ocean—but it never feels overwhelming.
During our retreat, it wasn't uncommon to spend the day exploring beaches and cliffside trails, then find ourselves watching the sunset as music drifted through town. On some evenings, live DJs played near the ocean and people gathered to dance, connect, and celebrate the end of another beautiful day. The atmosphere felt joyful and alive without losing the relaxed pace that defines life in Ericeira.
It's this balance that makes the town so memorable. It offers enough activity to keep things interesting while still providing the space to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with yourself.

Ocean Views Around Every Corner
The Atlantic Ocean is impossible to ignore here. Dramatic cliffs, endless coastal paths, and panoramic ocean views create a landscape that constantly invites you outdoors.
The water is undeniably chilly, especially if you're used to warmer destinations. But there was something invigorating about taking a quick dip each day. A few moments in the ocean was enough to feel refreshed, energized, and fully present.
For many of our retreat guests, those daily swims became a favorite ritual.
Whether hiking along the coastline, or simply sitting on a cliffside bench overlooking the Atlantic, the ocean became a constant companion throughout the week.
Hiking to Foz do Lizandro
One of our group excursions included a scenic walk to Foz do Lizandro, a beautiful beach where the Lizandro River meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The path offered sweeping coastal views and plenty of opportunities to pause and take in the scenery. Once we arrived, we spent the day enjoying the beach (and actually multiple beaches along the way), dipping our feet in the water, and embracing the slower pace that naturally emerges when there is nowhere else you need to be.
This area is a beautiful reminder of how restorative nature can be when you give yourself the time to experience it.
Exploring Ribeira d'Ilhas
Another memorable excursion took us to Ribeira d'Ilhas, one of Ericeira's most iconic coastal locations.
Known internationally for its surf breaks and dramatic ocean views, Ribeira d'Ilhas showcases the rugged beauty that makes this region so beloved. During summer months when the waves are calmer this is a beautiful beach to swim in, and the boardwalk/staircase set leading you down is absolutely picturesque.
The hike there offered another opportunity to move our bodies, breathe fresh ocean air, and experience the coastline from a different perspective. We also may or may not have bumped into some peacocks along the way…

A Day Trip to Sintra
No visit to the region would feel complete without a day trip to Sintra.
Located just a short drive from Ericeira, Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its colorful palaces, lush gardens, and fairytale-like atmosphere.
Walking through the winding streets, exploring historic estates, and taking in the incredible architecture felt like stepping into another world. The town's rich history and vibrant culture offered a beautiful contrast to our slower days spent by the ocean.
This was also a fun location to do a little shopping and eating after spending a few hours admiring the fairy tale castle.

More Than a Vacation
What makes Ericeira special isn't any single beach, hike, restaurant, or attraction.
It's the feeling.
It's waking up to the sound of the ocean. Walking through a town that encourages you to slow down, but also have a little fun. Watching the sunset from the cliffs. Taking a refreshing plunge into the Atlantic. Sharing meals with new friends. Dancing as live music fills the air.
There is a simplicity here that makes it easier to reconnect with yourself.
Whether you're joining a wellness retreat, planning a mindful getaway, or simply searching for a destination that offers both adventure and restoration, Ericeira has a way of staying with you long after you leave. I’m still dreaming about it a year later.
Perhaps that's what makes it so special. It feels less like a vacation destination and more like a place that reminds you how you want to feel.
Stay tuned, you know I have to take us back ◡̈.
